My name is Neville Longbottom, and I'm finishing up my third year here at Hogwarts. This letter is my application for the combined cadet force programme for the Young Protectors' League. I am writing my letter to you because I am interested in a career in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. The proposed summer programme sounds especially interesting to me, and I think that the skills they will be teaching would be particularly useful to someone planning for a career with the department of MLE.
I am not quite sure yet which division within the department would be the best match with my interests and abilities, but after all, I'm still only partway through my schooling and I have time to explore the various options. I just know I want to do something that gives me an opportunity to show my patriotism and support for Our Lord's vision for what the wizarding world should be. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement would give me that opportunity, and I would be very honoured if you would give me your consideration.
I'm also going to be very upfront and admit that I know I have a lot to overcome if I wish to be considered for a career with the MLE, especially given the history with the department of some of my (former) family members. But I also ask you to consider that this history also makes me an particularly motivated candidate, which could be a source of real strength. In fact, in all honesty, I have thought about becoming an Auror. I know that the Auror programme takes the best of the best, and maybe I don't look like the best of the best right now. My grandmother, Augusta Longbottom took on the task of raising me, when my parents abandoned me (along with their oath to the department and their loyalty to their country). She always told me that some people might think worse of me because of what my parents did. But even though it might take a long time and I might be forced do more than others to earn people's trust, I should never stop doing my best, to show that I'm someone who brings honour to the Longbottom name, rather than shame.
Another thing my Gran always said was that I was a late bloomer: late to walk and late to talk and late to show my magic. But she also said that one thing about late bloomers is that they can truly surprise people in the end because once they get going, they never give up. I promise that if you would give me a chance, I will do all that I can to show that I am willing to do whatever it takes to make the most of the opportunity.
Thank you.
Yours respectfully,
Neville Longbottom
